The 2026 World Digital Education Conference kicked off here on Monday. Themed on "AI+Education: Transformation Development Governance," this year's conference seeks to explore how AI can drive systemic educational transformation and promote high-quality educational development. An exhibition on achievements of global digital education is held during the conference.
On the morning of May 11, the 2nd Meeting of the First Executive Council and the 2026 General Assembly Meeting of the World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA) were held in Hangzhou during the 2026 World Digital Education Conference.
The cases were selected from more than 500 submissions received through a global call launched by the Alliance. The selection focused on real-world application, measurable outcomes, ethical responsibility and sustainability. The selected cases cover a wide range of areas, including personalized learning, smart campuses, intelligent assessment, teacher development, education equity, international Chinese language education, AI ethics and research innovation.
From May 11 to 13, 2026, the Global Youth AI Innovation Camp 2026 was successfully held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The event was organized by the World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA) and jointly hosted by the Education Bureau of Hangzhou High-Tech Zone (Binjiang) and Zhejiang Polytechnic University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Centered on the theme “AI Empowering Educational Innovation,” the camp brought together more than 100 teachers and students from 27 teams representing different countries and regions for a three-day journey of learning, innovation, and cultural exchange.
The World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA) is pleased to invite outstanding high school students worldwide to participate in the Global Youth AI Innovation Camp 2026, an international program designed to foster youth-led innovation and collaboration in AI for education. You are invited to contribute to the forthcoming Springer publication, Best Practices in Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED): Scenarios-Driven Educational Transformation, organized by the World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA). Selected case collections will be showcased during the World Digital Education Conference 2026. Furthermore, 10 Exemplary Best Practices will be selected from the submissions and released during the conference.
On 12 January 2026, the Inauguration Ceremony of Joint Secretariat for World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA) was held at Beijing Normal University. The event was attended by REN Youqun, Vice Minister of Education of China; LIU Limin, President of the China Education Association for International Exchange; YU Jihong, President of Beijing Normal University and Chairperson of WDEA; YANG Dan, Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education; and ZHANG Jin, Deputy Director-General of the same department, among other distinguished guests.
On January 30, 2024, the World Digital Education Conference 2024 opened in Shanghai under the theme “Digital Education: Application, Sharing, and Innovation.” During the conference, the World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA) was officially launched. Representing the founding organizations, Mr. Liu Limin, President of the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), introduced the background of the Alliance’s establishment and considerations for its future development.
From February 13 to 14, 2023, the World Digital Education Conference was held in Beijing. At the conference, Mr. Liu Limin, President of the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), released the proposal to establish the World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA).
Hangzhou, May 12, 2026 — The World Digital Education Alliance released two standards on artificial intelligence (AI) in education at the closing ceremony of the 2026 World Digital Education Conference (WDEC) in Hangzhou.
The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Education: A Reference Framework was officially released at the 2026 World Digital Education Conference (WDEC) on May 12. The document provides a systematic ethical framework and codes of conduct for the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) in basic education, higher education, and vocational education.
Artificial intelligence (AI), as a strategic technology leading a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, is profoundly changing the way humans produce and live. Digital technologies, particularly those centered on AI, hold immense potential for advancing inclusive, equitable, and quality education, as well as promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The 2025 World Digital Education Conference (WDEC) opened in Wuhan on May 14. Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng delivered a keynote speech titled “Jointly Advancing into the Intelligent Era and Promoting Educational Development and Transformation” at the opening ceremony.

On the morning of May 14, 2025, the First Executive Council Meeting and the 2025 General Assembly of the World Digital Education Alliance (WDEA) were successfully convened in Wuhan during the World Digital Education Conference 2025. These meetings marked the official establishment of the Alliance’s governance mechanism and signified a new stage of institutionalized and standardized operations.
The First Executive Council of the Alliance was confirmed to consist of 18 member units, with Beijing Normal University serving as the first Chair Unit. A Joint Secretariat, formed by Beijing Normal University and the China Education.
